Best Finger Lakes Microbrew

Winner: ROC Brewing – What the Fuggle

ROC350
In the traffic jam of big, bold American IPAs, Roc Brewing decided to drive on the other side of the road. Chock full of earthy English Fuggles hops, this hoppy beer is fun to order and even better to experience. Brewed right in the heart of downtown Rochester, its playful orange and spice characteristics liven up its biscuity body and lead you to a pleasant finish. For extra good measure, the brewmaster throws this one on 2 varieties of American oak to cure and impart the wonderful qualities of light vanilla and coconut.
The city’s newest microbrewery suggests pairing it with a slice of carrot cake, noting that the texture of the dessert – light and smooth – lends balance to a subtle softness across the palate. The warming of the alcohol and vanilla mellow the spices of the cake, and the hops finish off the experience, making this brew its own one-of-a-kind treat.

Top Nominee: Naked Dove – 45 Fathoms Porter

Naked Doveporter350

Naked Dove Brewing Company was born through our passionate commitment to the Art and Science of Brewing. Naked Dove concentrates on doing one thing: utilizing the best ingredients that the world has to offer to brew world class beers locally. The 45 Fathoms Porter is as deep and dark as the depths of Canandaigua Lake. Naked Dove brews the Robust Porter with five different roasted malts to give it a deep long roasted character. The flavors change and develop as you drink the beer, giving an array of chocolate and coffee roasted notes. The flavor is deeply complex in its roasted character, but is careful not to make the jump to being burnt or astringent. This beer is perfectly paired with strong flavored cheeses, chocolate and seafood (particularly scallops and shellfish).
